Beautiful source material from a respected educational resource

The verses and short stories are drawn, with permission, from the much-loved Waldorf educational resource Putting the Heart Back into Teaching: A Manual for Junior Primary Teachers by Stan Maher and Yvonne Bleach, published by Novalis Press.

Rich in imaginative language and memorable pictures, the verses offer far more than words to be recited. They provide starting points for drawing, painting, movement, gesture, modeling and classroom conversation. Teachers and parents can return to the imagery in many different ways, allowing each number to unfold gradually through artistic and lived experience.

The original melodies were composed by Lydia J van Vuuren to make these verses easy and enjoyable to sing with young children.

Simple, accessible melodies for the early years

The songs are written in simple, primarily pentatonic melodies suited to young voices and to the musical atmosphere of the early Waldorf grades.

They do not require elaborate accompaniment or specialist musical training. A teacher or parent can learn them from the recording and begin singing them with the children. Their clear melodic shapes make them suitable for repetition, movement and daily classroom or home rhythms.

The recordings may be used to learn the music, accompany activities or simply allow children to enjoy listening to the complete songs and stories.
